Bronze Star
First Lieutenant Rafael A. Serra, 0938298, Infantry,
Company "B", 65th
Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army.
On 29 January 1951, near
Turung, Korea, Company "B" was in a defensive perimeter
on Hill 270 when it
was attacked and surrounded by and estimated three
hundred enemy armed with
grenade, automatic weapons, and mortars. During the
attack a gap was opened
in the perimeter defense and the enemy started infiltrating
through. Lieutenant
Serra, the company commander, realized the danger
and reorganized his
company so as to plug the gap. At this time he was
attacked from the rear.
He immediately called for and adjusted mortar and
artillery fire to his front
and rear, disrupting the attack and forcing the enemy
to retreat. The courage
and leadership displayed by Lieutenant Serra reflect
great credit upon himself
and the military service. Entered the military service
from Puerto Rico.
