SOLDIER'S MEDAL
FIRST LIEUTENANT ROBERT M. STUMP, 058134, Infantry,
Headquarters and
Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division,
United States Army. On 23 December 1950 near Hungnam, Korea, an infantry
squad had moved into an anti-personnel mine field by mistake. Some of the
mines detonated, causing casualties. One member of the squad was stranded
for over an hour, not daring to move. Upon arriving aat the scene, Lieutenant
Stump voluntarily entered the mine field, although he had no knowledge of
its
arrangement, careflly made his way to the man and led him to safety. Lieutenant
Stump's great courage and presence of mind reflect high credit upon himself
and the military service. Entered the military service from the State of
Washington.
