GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 359 - 15 August 1951
AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and men:
FIRST LIEUTENANT BENJAMIN L. GUNTER, JR., 062202, Infantry, Heavy Mortar Company, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 26 April 1951, Lieutenant GUNTER'S company was attacked by an enemy force near Yungam-ni, Korea, which succeeded in penetreting the western sector of the company's perimeter. Despite a hail of enemy fire, he succeeded in establishing a defensive line which subsequently withstood all enemy assaults. In the course of the battle, a platoon sergeant was badly wounded and making his way to his side, Lieutenant GUNTER administered the necessary first aid to the stricken man. Returning to the firing line, he continued to encourage the men, enabling them to hold tenaciously to their positions. Lieutenant GUNTER'S heroism and courage reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from the State of North Carolina.
