Bronze Star
Second Lieutenant Benjamin Vazquez Martinez, 01685795,
Infantry, Company
"G", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States
Army. During the
period 9-11 December 1950, near Sudong-ni, Korea,
Lieutenant Vazquez Martinez
was platoon leader in his company, whose mission was
to keep open a part of the
escape route for the marine's withdrawal from the
Chosin Reservoir to Hamhung.
Lieutenant Vazquez Martinez's organization of his
platoon defense sector, taking
maximum advantage of available concealment and using
mutually supporting auto-
matic weapons positions to the utmost, contributed
materially to the successful
accomplishment of his company's mission. He repeatedly
exposed himself to heavy
fire. His inspiring leadership was instrumental in
the large number of casualties
inflicted on the enemy by members of his platoon,
while suffering no
casualties themselves. Lieutenant Vazquez Martinez's
fearless leadership,
initiative and heroism reflect great credit upon himself
and the military ser-
vice. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
