GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 230 -6  July 1953
 

    AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted officer:

Second Lieutenant Alton H. Harvey, JR., 01926050, Infantry, Company "A", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 18 February 1953, Lieutenant HARVEY conducted a reconnaissance patrol into the frozen and disputed area of Tangwon-ni, Korea, to investigate reports of suspected enemy positions. Accompanied by a platoon sergeant, radioman, dog handler and one trained scout dog, he probed deeply into the enemy territiory where hostile fire had previously raked the area. The scout dog alerted many times, denoting the presence of enemy personnel in the vicinity, but Lieutenant HARVEY adroitly and resolutely continued advancing and collecting the information on enemy installations, avenues of approach, and various terrain features. Although communication with his supporting units was out due to an accidental fall by the radioman, he remained faithful to his mission and accumulated the vital intelligence matter that originate within hearing distance of enemy positions. He then returned with the necessary knowledge which was invaluable to his superiors in organizing a strong perimeter of defense capable of withstanding enemy probes. The success of his mission was evidenced in the eventual routing of enemy surprise attacls/ :oeitemamt HARVEY'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Mississippi.
