Second Lieutenant CARL L. GERWICK, 01934917, Infantry, Company "E", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 14 June 1953, Company "E" made a raid on Hill 412, a strongly fortified enemy outpost in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea. Lieutenant GERWICK was platoon leader of the Weapons Platoon, forming a section of the support element. As the force approached the objective, Lieutenant GERWICK and his platoon became the object of intense machine gun fire, suffering heavy casualties. When the support element reached its position he directed a base of fire on the hill despite heavy enemy shelling concentrated on his area. Although wounded by the enemy fire, he refused to be evacuated until the more seriously wounded were removed and remained on position, directing his men. Lieutenant GERWICK'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Nebraska.
