GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 229 -6 July 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men:
Second Lieutenant HANS G. OLSEN, 01925827, Infantry, Company "E", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the morning of 31 May 1953 Lieutenant OLSEN voluntarily led a searching patrol forward of friendly lines to reach and evacuate two wounded technical liaison agents who had been wounded and were believed to be lying helpless a short distance from enemy positions in the vicinity of Songnae-dong, Korea. Upon reaching the wounded men, it was discovered that they were lying within a known enemy mine field. Without hesitation, he entered the extremely dangerous area to recover the wounded men while the remaining members of the patrol prepared to support his movement by fire. When the bodies had been recovered, he led a successful retrograde movement to the safety of friendly lines. As a result of his actions, the lives of the two wounded technical liaisen personnel were saved. Lieutenant OLSEN'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Minnesota.
