GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 260 11 July 1951AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men :
CHAPLAIN (CAPTAIN) ANDRE H. PAYETTE, 0504985, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 23 March 1951, in the vicinity of Uijongbu, Korea, Chaplain PAYETTE was visiting a front line area when the enemy launched a heavy mortar and artillery barrage. Learning that several men had been killed and wounded by the devastating fire, he proceeded into the area and supervised the evacuation of these casualties. Chaplain PAYETTE's timely removal of two wounded men resulted in the saving of their lives because two shells exploded, a short time later from where they had been previously evacuated. The heroism, indicative of complete devotion to duty, with which Chaplain PAYETTE performed this action reflects great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from the State of New York.
