HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 440 9 October 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men:
Captain ANGEL L. TORRES, 0968116, Infantry, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 25 July and during the early morning hours of 26 July 1953, in the vicinity of Pong-Dong, Korea, the 1st Battalion Headquarters area was subjected to a heavy enemy artillery bombardment. As the fire increased in intensity, several members of the unit fell wounded and Captain TORRES left the safety of his foxhole and moved through the fire to aid the casualties. Ignoring the rounds striking near him, he courageously gave aid to the men and evacuated them as quickly as possible. Though physically exhausted and constantly vulnerable to enemy fire, Captain TORRES continued to go from one wounded man to another, administering the necessary aid and offering words of encouragement untill all had been safely removed from the terrain under fire. Captain TORRES' outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Puerto Rico.
