CORPORAL ISMAEL SANTOS REYES, RA30405889, Heavy Mortar Company, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the night of 26 April 1951, near Yongam-ni, Korea, as the Heavy Mortar Company and elements of the 2nd Battalion, 65th Infantry, were surrounded and under heavy enemy fire, Corporal SANTOS REYES was in firing position on the left flank of the perimeter observing enemy soldiers entering a nearby house for the purpose of using it as an advantageous firing position, Corporal SANTOS REYES crawled forward through intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire and hurled an incendiary grenade through a window. As the house caught on fire, the enemy troops within were forced to withdraw and the generated light enabled the beleaguered units to place effective fire on the hostile forces, causing them to withdraw. The heroism and presence of mind displayed by Corporal SANTOS REYES reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military services.
