HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 523 16 December 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted man:
Corporal (then Private First Class) CARL SCHWARZ, US55276708, Infantry, Company "B", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the afternoon of 17 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, a patrol element from Company "B" was pinned down near enemy lines by intense machine gun and artillery fire. Learning of the situation, Corporal SCHWARZ immediately volunteered to accompany a relief force in an attempt to evacuate the casualties and guide the patrol members to safety. He courageously left his sheltered position and advanced up the slope under fire to the trapped unit. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he repeatedly moved through the impact area, carrying the wounded to a position where aid could be administered and after the bombardment had decreased in intensity, assisting in the evacuation of patrol members to friendly lines. Corporal SCHWARZ' outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Nebraska.
