GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 83 30 March 1951AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men:
CORPORAL ELIAS SANTIAGO, RA30422994, Infantry, Company "C", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 14 February 1951, near Ncha-dong, Korea, Corporal SANTIAGO a gunner, was advancing with his platoon to reinforce another platoon of Company "C" which had engaged a numeriacally superior enemy force. As the platoon advanced it was pinned down by enemy action. On the north side of hill 327 Corporal SANTIAGO discovered a group of the enemy emplacing a heavy mortar. Abandoning his covered position, he moved under intense fire to an exposed position, set up his machine gun, and then fired on the enemy killing five of them. He continued to deliver fire on the mortar position, denying other enemy troops access to the weapon. The courage under fire displayed by Corporal SANTIAGO reflects great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
