GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 427 1 October 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Corporal ERIKS KLAVINS, US51182813, Army Medical Service, Medical Service, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the late afternoon of 27 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, Heavy Mortar Company's rear area was heavily shelled by the enemy. In the action, a shell struck the communications tent and seriously wounded eight occupants. Corporal KLAVINS, a medical aidman heard a call for help and immediately went to the aid of the wounded men. He quickly distributed medical supplies among the men who had rushed to the scene and then gave clear, concise instructions in administering first aid. He then accompanied a vehicle carrying two wounded men to the collecting station over a route subjected to heavy enemy artillery fire. With disregard for his personal safety, he continually exposed himself to the fire to render further treatment to the casualties. Upon arriving at the station, he quickly delivered the men to the waiting surgeon. Corporal KLAVINS' outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Connecticut.
