HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 387 8 Sept 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men:
Corporal (then Private First Class) HARVEY P. CHEEK, US54085442, Infantry, Company "F", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the afternoon of 10 June 1953, in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea, Company "F" had forced the enemy from Hill "412" and was preparing for a counterattack. Corporal CHEEK, a machine gunner, was positioned on one of the commanding peaks of the hill and was the first to see the enemy forces forming for the attack. When a small enemy advance element reached the foot of the hill, he leveled accurate and effective machine gun fire on them. An intense barrage of enemy mortar fire soon blankedted his position but he elected to remain at his post and continued firing on the attacking enemy, greatly depleting the force and contributing materially to the successful defense of the hill. Corporal CHEEK'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Louisiana.
