GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 229 -6 July 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted man:
Corporal LOUIS M. MURPHY, RA35820726, Infantry, Company "E", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the afternoon of 9 June 1953, a daylight combat patrol moved forward from the main line of resistance to attack Hill "412" in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea. Corporal MURPHY was a member of the assault force that closed with the enemy, inflicting numerous casualties on the foe. When the attack began, he moved forward with his patrol leader. He observed two hostile soldiers and fired on them, mortally wounding both. The enemy began subjecting the friendly force to intense automatic, small arms and hand grenade fire, wounding Corporal MURPHY with grenade fragments. Disregarding his wounds, he continued firing his weapon, mortally wounding two more enemy soldiers before his ammunition was expended. When the patrol received word to return to friendly lines, he refused aid and moved back to the main line of resistance. Corporal MURPHY'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Kentucky.
