GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 466  29 October 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL  - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named oficer and enlisted men:

Corporal RICHARD COOLEY, RA16414426, Infantry, Company "H", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the evening of 14 July 1953, in the vicinity of Sinmok-tong, Korea, the enemy was shelling friendly positions with artillery and mortar concentrations. Corporal COOLEY'S squad leader and section leader had been gone longer than necessary on a reconnaissance mission to an adjacent unit. He bravely moved out to search for them and, despite the enemy fire falling in the area, located the men, both of whom had been wounded and were unable to walk. He courageously removed them to a place of comparative safety and administered aid. Corporal COOLEY guarded his comrades until dark and then evacuated them to an aid station for vitally needed medical treatment. His brave actions and disregard for his personal safety were directly responsible for saving the lives of the men. Corporal COOLEY'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Washington.
