GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 342 - 8 August 1951
AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - (FIRST BRONZE OAK LEAF CLUSTER) By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men:
CAPTAIN CALVIN E. GLIDEWELL, 028418, Infantry, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 5 June 1951, near Chail-li, Korea, Company "I" spearheaded the battalion's attack on enemy positions across the Hant'an River. As the lead elements approached the river, they were subjected to an intense volume of enemy fire; and the men, attempting to take advantage of the scant cover which was afforded, scattered over a large area and rapidly became disorganized. Captain GLIDEWELL, Company Commander, fearlessly exposed himself to intense fire in order to regroup his men and direct their fire and movement. Under Captain GLIDEWELL'S skillful direction, the unit held its ground throughout the night and, during the early morning hours, successfully force the enemy to abandon his positions. The heroism and aggressiveness displayed by Captain GLIDEWELL reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the high traditions of the military service. Entered the military service from the state of Alabama.
