AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL (FIRST BRONZE OAK LEAF CLUSTER). By
direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944
(Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600 - 45, and DA Message W89043, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device (First Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster) for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men :
LIEUTENANT COLONEL HOWARD B. ST. CLAIR, 022017, Infantry, Headquarters, and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 4 June 1951, near Unchon-ni, Korea, the 1st Battalion, 65th Infantry attacked well camouflaged enemy positions on Hill 466. Colonel St. Clair directed the attacking elements from a forward observation post which was constantly subjected to an intense mortar and artillery barrage. Although the numerically superior enemy force launched a fanatical counterattack and the volume of mortar and artillery fire placed on the observation post intensified, Colonel ST CLAIR fearlessly continued to control the unit ; and his presence so inspired the friendly troops that they successfully repelled the enemy. Colonel ST CLAIR'S heroism, aggressive leadership, and determination reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service. Entered the military service from the military service from the State of West Virginia.
