HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 385 8 Sept 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Master Sergeant DAVID L. McKENDREE, RA34543505, Infantry, Company "I", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the afternoon of 25 June 1953, in the vicinity of Sangdong-Ni, Korea, a reconnaissance party, of which Sergeant McKENDREE was a member, was subjected to intense concentrations of enemy artillery fire as it moved forward to the main line of resistance to inspect positions which the company would soon occupy. As the men began to disperse to find sheltered positions, one man was wounded by shell fragments and fell, unable to reach protective cover. Sergeant McKENDREE courageously went to the aid of the casualty and, despite the heavy barrage, removed the wounded man to a relatively safe position. His aggressive actions were responsible for saving the life of a comrade. Sergeant McKENDREE's outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from California.
