HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 190 14 June 1951AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer and enlisted men :
MASTER SERGEANT PEDRO OTERO ORTEGA, RA10404958, Infantry, Company "G", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 7 November 1950, near Yonghung, Korea, Company "G" was fiercely attacked by a large enemy force. As the communications were completely out and the situation was critical, the weapons platoon leader placed Sergeant OTERO ORTEGA, in charge of the platoon while he sought out the company commander for permission to withdraw to more tenable positions. As Sergeant Otero Ortega maintained heavy mortar fire upon the enemy forces, friendly troops to the front and both flanks withdrew leaving the weapons platoon completely exposed. Displaying coolness and superior leadership, he kept the platoon in action and the enemy under heavy fire until ordered to withdraw, at which time he displaced the entire unit to the rear without casualty although heavily engaged by the enemy. Sergeant OTERO ORTEGA's heroism and attention to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
