HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 403 15 Sept 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officers and enlisted men:
Private First Class DUANE R. GRAHAM, US55266059, Infantry, Heavy Mortar Company 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the evening of 27 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, the rear area of Heavy Mortar Company became subjected to an intense enemy artillery and mortar barrage. In the action, a shell struck the communications tent, seriously wounding eight occupants. Responding to calls for help, Private GRAHAM, the mail clerk, quickly left the comparative safety of the command post and went to the aid of the casualties. When he reached them, he assisted the medical aidman in treating two of the casualties and, after helping load the men on a truck, accompanied them to the collecting station. As the vehicle proceeded down a road which was under heavy fire, Private GRAHAM continued to protect the men from further wounds until they had successfully reached the station. He then returned to the company area and courageously helped evacuate the remaining casualties. Private GRAHAM'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon hemself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Michigan.
