HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 452 16 October 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named officer and enlisted men:
Private First Class EARL C. NELSON, US51178233, Army Medical Service, Medical Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the afternoon of 2 July 1953, in the vicinity of Homsok-tong, Korea, the enemy was shelling united Nations positions with intense artillery and mortar fire. Private NELSON, a medical aidman, received word that a man from a nearby company was lying, seriously wounded, in a small valley below his position. Although the area was under enemy observation and fire, he voluntarily moved down the shell torn slope to the casualty. After administering the vitally needed first aid, he courageously removed the man to the safety of a company command post. He was directly responsible for saving the life of the friendly soldier. Private NELSON'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from New York.
