GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 428  1 October 1953

AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL  - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:

Private First Class HOWARD G. TOMKINS, US52182344, Infantry, Company "H", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the afternoon of 2 July 1953, in the vicinity of Homsok-Tong, Korea, the enemy commenced to shell main line of resistance positions with intense artillery and mortar fire. In the ensuing action, Private TOMKINS noticed a wounded comrade lying in a small valley and voluntarily left the comparative safety of his bunker to aid the man. With disregard to his personal safety, he courageously moved down the slope to the casualty. Upon reaching him, he administered aid and then assisted in removing him to the company command post. He refused to return to his sheltered position until assured that the wounded man had received medical care and had been evacuated to a safe area. Private TOMKINS' outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Pennsylvania.
