GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 357 24 Aug 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Private First Class Thomas E. Hicks, US53121336, Armor, Tank Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early evening hours of 21 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kungdong-Myon, Korea, one of the tanks of a task force returning to its assembly area came upon two Republic of Korea soldiers who lay seriously wounded. Private HICKS, a crew member of the tank, immediately left the shelter of his tank and exposing himself to the intense enemy shellfire which blanketed the area, ran to the place where the casualties lay. He then assisted in placing them onto the tank for evacuation. As Private HICK'S tank was returning to the friendly lines, it encountered heavy barrages of enemy mortar and artillery fire, but arrived safely with the wounded Republic of Korea soldiers. Private HICKS' outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Tennessee.
