GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 242 -10 July 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Private RICHARD A. STRAYER, US52186228, Army Medical Service, Medical Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early morning hours of 11 June 1953, the enemy attacked the Company "B" sector of the friendly main line of resistance in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea. The enemy employed heavy concentrations of mortar and artillery fire, causing several friendly casualties in the area. Private STRAYER was in the forward aid station bunker at the inception of the attack. He immediately left the comparative safety of the bunker and reported to the forward command post of Company "B". Upon receiving word that two men were seriously wounded out in an exposed area, he moved through the devastating fire to give aid to the casualties. As he administered first aid and evacuated the casualties to the forward aid station, he was constantly exposed to intense enemy small arms and artillery fire. Private STRAYER continually worked throughout the remainder of the attack, with complete disregard to the fire which fell around him. Private STRAYER'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Pennsylvania.
