HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 354 24 Aug 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL (POSTHUMOUS) - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded posthumously to the following named officer and enlisted men:
Private ROBERT E. CARLSON, RA11256360, Infantry, Company "K", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early morning hours of 6 July 1953, Company "K" began to raid enemy held hill 250 in the vicinity of Honu-Chon, Korea. Private CARLSON was a wireman in the assault platoon. Shortly after the attack began, enemy fire destroyed his wire lines. Private CARLSON, without regard for his personal safety, immediately moved forward to join an assault squad in the attack. On the hill, he advanced towards a machine gun bunker, firing his carbine as he rushed the position. His rapid and accurate fire contributed greatly toward neutralizing the machine gun bunker. As he continued to assault the remaining positions, he was mortally wounded by the fragments of an enemy artillery shell. Private CARLSON'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Massachusetts.
