GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 284 - 15 JULY 1951
AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL. - By direction of the president, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944) and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, and Department of the Army Message W89043, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following-named officers and enlisted men:
PRIVATE JAMES SALAS, ER57011099, Infantry, Company "F", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 31 March 1951, Company "F" launched an attack against well-defended enemy entrenchments on Hill 398 near Choksong-myon, Korea. While moving forward with the leading elements as a scout, Private SALAS established contact with the hostile forces and was immediately subjected to concentrated enemy fire. Courageously returning the enemy fire and throwing grenades, he single handedly held his ground until the rest of the platoon moved into position. Joining his platoon, he moved up the hill through withering enemy fire to hurl grenades into the enemy emplacement's and lend rifle support to the assaulting elements. Private SALAS' heroic actions materially contributed to the success of the assault and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
