On 31 March 1951, in the vicinity of Choksong-myon, Korea, Company "F" attacked firmly entrenched enemy defenses on Hill 398. The first platoon was assigned the mission of relieving the pressure on the leading assault elements. Nearing the objective, the platoon was subjected to heavy machine gun and grenade fire but Sergeant MALAVE, effectively deploying his squad, brought heavy fire to bear on the enemy, forcing him to withdraw to positions at the top of the hill. Exposing himself to withering fire, Sergeant MALAVE led his squad in a final assault and drove the enemy from the hill. The selfless heroism displayed by Sergeant MALAVE reflects great credit upon himself and exemplifies the high traditions of the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
