HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 407 16 Sept 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Sergeant First Class HENRY J. PENDL, US26358789, Infantry, Company "K", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early morning hours of 6 July 1953, in the vicinity of Honu-Chon, Korea, Company "K" commenced an attack on enemy held Hill "250". Twenty minutes after the firefight began, elements of the support platoon were called upon to evacuate the casualties. Sergeant PENDL, the assistant platoon sergeant of the unit, began effectively directing the litter teams to the wounded. When the order to leave was received, he courageously remained behind, despite the heavy enemy mortar and artillery fire falling in the area, to search the hill for any wounded not yet evacuated. Upon completion of the evacuation, he helped a walking casualty back to friendly lines. Sergeant PENDL'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Illinois.
