Sergeant First Class (then Corporal) RICHARD V. POE, RA29044315, Infantry, Company "I", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During ther early morning hours of 3 July 1953, in the vicinity of Honu-Chon, Korea, a patrol set out from Company "I" on a reconnaissance mission. As it moved near an area which was known to be mined, several explosions were heard. Upon investigation it was learned that a friendly patrol had unkowingly entered the minefield and suffered several casualties as a result of the explosions. Sergeant POE immediately volunteered to supervise the evacuation of the wounded. As the operation was in progress, a series of flares illuminated the area and the group in the mined terrain was soon subjected to intense enemy mortar fire. With disregard for his personal safety, Sergeant POE courageously continued his vital work until all the casualties were removed to safety. Sergeant POE'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Hawaii.
