Bronze Star
Sergeant First Class Melvin L. Jones, RA33507413,
Infantry, Heavy Tank
Company, 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United
States Army. On 7 February
1951, near Pangyori, Korea, Sergeant Jones noticed
an abandoned tank protected
by enemy riflemen and mortars. With complete disregard
for his personal safety
he left the cover of his tank and made his way through
dense enemy small arms
and mortar fire to the abandoned tank. He tossed a
grenade into the open
turret, waited until it exploded, and then tossed
another grenade into the
fighting compartment completely destroying the controls
of the tank. The
heroic action of rendering the tank useless while
under fire reflects great
credit upon Sergeant Jones and the military service.
Entered the military
service from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
