HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 442 10 October 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following enlisted men:
Sergeant DONALD R. JOHNSON, US52208488, Army Medical Service, Medical Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early afternoon of 2 July 1953, in the vicinity of Pang-dong, Korea, a group of Republic of Korea soldiers was advancing up a road when an intense barrage of enemy artillery and mortar fire began to fall in the immediate area. They rapidly moved to safe positions, leaving two wounded comrades in the terrain under fire. Sergeant Johnson a medical aidman attached to Company "G", observed the action from a nearby position and, with complete disregard for his safety, courageously went to the aid of the casualties. Ignoring the heavy fire, he rapidly administered vitally needed medical aid and prepared them for evacuation. When transportation arrived to remove the men Sergeant JOHNSON carefully put them into the vehicle and accompanied them to a sheltered position, where he continued his medical treatment. The outstanding heroism and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant JOHNSON reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Pennsylvania.
