HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 433 7 October 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Sergeant HERBERT H. CARTER, RA13428823, Infantry, Company "G", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the late afternoon of 16 July 1953, in the vicinity of Kumhwa, Korea, a friendly patrol unknowingly entered a minefield and detonated some mines, wounding several of the men. Upon learning of the accident, Sergeant CARTER volunteered to serve as a litter bearer in evacuating the casualties from the hazardous area. Exposing himself to intense artillery, mortar and small arms fire, he immediately went into the minefield and courageously assisted in removing the wounded from the terrain underfire. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he made several trips carrying the litters to a safe position. Sergeant CARTER'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal Service from Virginia.
