GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 330 - 30 JULY 1951
AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL (POSTHUMOUS) - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted man:
SERGEANT (then CORPORAL) ISMAEL MATOS - TORRES, RA30423280, Infantry, Company "B", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On 27 April 1951, near Uijongbu, Korea, Company "B" was surrounded by a large enemy force and subjected to intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and mortar fire. When the unit was ordered to withdraw, it became necessary to drive a wedge through the enemy encirclement. Learning that a friendly infantryman had been seriously wounded during the fierce engagement, Sergeant MATOS - TORRES unhesitatingly volunteered to remain behind and help in the evacuation operatiion . Placing the stricken soldier on a litter, Sergeant MATOS - TORRES, assisted by three other volunteers, carried him approximately 800 yards over exposed terrain through the gap in the encirclement to a position of safety, where medical aid was efficiently administered. The selfless heroism displayed by Sergeant MATOS - TORRES reflects great credit upon himself and exemplifies the high traditions of the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
