On 3 December 1951, Sergeant RIVERA HERNANDEZ, a surgical technician, accompanied the Battalion Surgeon to Company "C" positions near Chokeri, Korea. During the Surgeon's lecture to the troops, an intense barrage of hostile artillery and mortar fire began to fall in the area, with the initial blasts seriously wounding two men. While the Surgeon treated one of the wounded men, Sergeant RIVERA HERNANDEZ HERNANDEZ completely disregarded his own safety as he ran across 150 yards of the fire-swept terrain to get to the side of the other wounded man. Even though enemy artillery shells continued to explode all around him, he calmly administered first aid and safely removed his injured comrade to a defilade position. Sergeant RIVERA HERNANDEZ inspirational heroism and outstanding devotion to duty wee instrumental in saving the life of a fellow soldier and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal service from Puerto Rico.
