GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 357 24 Aug 1953AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Sergeant WILLIAM J. DONLEVY, RA12309819, Infantry, Company "E", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the night of 14 June 1953, Company "E" made a raid on Hill 412 in the vicinity of Sagimak, Korea. The force departed from the main line of resistance under heavy enemy artillery fire. From the inception of the action, the company suffered heavy casualties. As they reached the objective and began entering the enemy position, intense machine gun fire forced several of the men to take cover. Sergeant DONLEVY was the squad leader of the weapons squad which formed a portion of the assault element. He directed fire of the squads light machine guns and flame thrower. Although his squad suffered heavy casualties, Sergeant DONLEVY offered encouragement to his men and inspired them to perform with outstanding aggressiveness. After the group had returned to the main line of resistance, he volunteered to accompany his company commander in returning to the enemy trenches to search for friendly casualties. Sergeant DONLEVY, unable to evacuate the wounded he had found because of his wounds, remained with the men, giving them aid until litters arrived. Sergeant DONLEVY'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the militarty service. Entered the Federal Service from Massachusetts.
