GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 377 - 26 December 1952
AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Captain GILBERTO GONZALEZ JULIA, 0334520, Infantry, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. On the morning of 19 September 1952, Captain GONZALEZ JULIA, while observing action taking place on an outpost known as "Kelly", in the vicinity of Koyangdae, Korea, noticed two helpless wounded soldiers lying at the base of a hill. Selecting a volunteer to aid him in evacuating the casualties, he fearlessly braved the fierce hostile sniper, mortar and artillery fire as he crossed the devastated area and located the wounded men. Realizing the need for immediate medical attention, he quickly began carrying one of the casualties toward the friendly positions, while on his mission of mercy, he was subjected to the rifle fire of a sniper concealed on the top of the hill, forcing him to take a longer route, therby exposing himself to the hostile mortar barrage for a longer period of time, while evacuating the casualty. After reaching friendly positions, he carried the wounded man to an aid station where he could receive further medical treatment. Captain GONZALEZ JULIA'S fearless actions and outstanding heroism were responsible for the safe evacuation of the two wounded men and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal service from Puerto Rico.
