HEADQUARTERS 3D INFANTRY DIVISION
GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 364 - 29 August 1953
AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL - By direction of the President, under the provisions of Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (Sec II, WD Bul 3, 1944), and pursuant to authority in AR 600-45, the Bronze Star Medal with Letter "V" device for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States is awarded to the following named enlisted men:
Private First Class JACK E. WHITEHOUSE, RA16331974, Infantry, Company "K", 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early morning hours of 6 July, 1953, in the vicinity of Honu-chen, Korea, Company "K" began to attack enemy held Hill "250". When the fire fight had been in progress a short time the support platoon was called into action. Upon arriving at the scene of conflict, Private WHITEHOUSE, a rifleman, sighted a number of the enemy advancing over the crest of the hill. He quickly alerted the platoon and commenced to fire upon them with his carbine. In the ensuing action, his rapid, accurate fire contributed in large measure to the complete rout of the counterattacking enemy. Shortly thereafter Private WHITEHOUSE moved forward and observed that the enemy had a machine gun bunker located near the top of the hill. Without regard for his personal safety, he stood up and courageously hurled grenades into the aperture of the fortifications. His effective placement of grenades caused considerable damage to the enemy emplacement. When the order was given to move off the hill, he remained behind to cover the retrograde movement and help evacuate friendly casualties. Private WHITEHOUSE'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal service from Indiana.
