GENERAL ORDERS - NUMBER 183 - 9 June 1951

 

   PRIVATE FIRST CLASS VIDAL ORTIZ, ER57011256, Infantry, Company "B", 65th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division. United States Army. On 27 April 1951, near Uijonbu, Korea. Private ORTIZ was directing mortar fire upon a large enemy force that had pinned down friendly troops. Several enemy automatic weapons were concentrating on the troops and his position, but Private ORTIZ, disregarding the deadly enemy fire, remained exposed to direct mortar fire until the enemy automatic weapons had been destroyed, opening a way for a successful bayonet charge. The heroism and determination displayed by Private ORTIZ reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the military service from Puerto Rico.
