Private First Class WILLIAM K. SOUTHERLY, RA13362196, Infantry, Medical Company, 65th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, United States Army. During the early morning hours of 16 May 1953, Company "G", holding a defensive position on Outpost "Harry", in the vicinity of Songnae-dong, Korea, was subjected to an intense artillery and mortar barrage prior to an attack by hostile forces. At the peak of the assault, Private SOUTHERLY, with complete disregard for his personal safety, voluntarily left his bunker and moved out into the exposed trenches to evacuate the dead and wounded. Despite the artillery, mortar and small arms fire, he reached the disabled men. After administering first aid to the wounded, he preceded to evacuate them to the rear. His actions resulted in saving the lives of the wounded and in positive identification of those killed in action. Private SOUTHERLY'S outstanding heroism and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service. Entered the Federal service from West Virginia.
